To mark the inauguration of Borgir, the research and innovation centre at Sólborg, the Akureyri Town Council agreed to provide an annual contribution of ISK 2 million for a period of five years to the University of Akureyri Research Fund. This proposal was approved on October 28th 2004, with the stipulation that this contribution should be awarded to support research to be conducted by the University of Akureyri in collaboration with the institutes and companies based at Borgir.
The board of directors of the research fund oversees grants from the fund and details such grants in an annual report. This support of research projects by the town of Akureyri, on behalf of the institutes operating at Borgir, is designed to support scientific operations and innovations in industry within the Eyjafjörður region while also strengthening the position of Icelandic society on the international stage.
