Research sabbaticals and leave of absence for professional training

Research sabbaticals                                                                                                                                               Professors, associate professors, assistant professors and adjunct lecturers at the University of Akureyri can apply for research sabbaticals on the basis of a contract on salaries and work conditions between the Minister of Finance and the University of Akureyri that states in article 2008 no. 85.

The University Council is authorised to reduce or remove the teaching and administrative duties of university teaching staff for one or two semesters at a time, in order to make it possible for the staff member to spend more (an increased part) of his working time on research. Teaching and administrative duties performed by the teaching staff both during regular work hours and while on research leave shall normally constitute at least 50% of the work load, but the University Council is authorised in exceptional circumstances to waive this condition.

Rules on research leave (english version is in translation) were approved at a meeting of the University Council of the University of Akureyri in March 2012. Applications for research leave are to be submitted to the Research Centre of the University of Akureyri before September 15th each year.

Teaching staff and other employees, who have received sabbaticals, are to submit reports on work performed during their periods of leave no later than two months after the sabbatical has ended.

Leave of absence for professional training
Permanent staff of the University, unhampered by research duties, who have worked at the University for at least four years, are entitled to apply for leave of absence for professional training extending for as long as two months. Rules on professional training leave were approved at a meeting of the University Council of the University of Akureyri on June 16th 2000.

Applications for leave of absence for professional training are to be received by the project manager no later than three months prior to commencement of the leave. If the applicant is able to apply sooner, it is to be done, and then it is advantageous to receive the application before the approval of the operations plan for the year involved.
