The Department of Geography, University of Tartu, covers research and education in all fields of modern geography such as physical geography, landscape ecology, geoinformatics, cartography, and human geography. In-depth and applied research is carried out as follows:
- Physical geography and landscape ecology: nutrient fluxes in landscape, changes in landscape and wetlands (prof Ülo Mander), climate change (prof Jaak Jaagus).
- Human geography and regional planning: mobile positioning studies, real-time geography studies, demographic processes, post-communist urban studies and suburbanisation, rural change studies, turism studies, environmental and regional planning cases (prof Rein Ahas and prof Tiit Tammaru).
- Geoinformatics and cartography: GIS landscape- and regional-scale modelling of various natural and socio-economic processes, remote sensing and earth observation methods (prof Tõnu Oja).
The department of geography carries out several research projects on landscape change, demography, and regional innovation funded by EU, the Estonian ministries, local authorities and other partners.
